After yesterday you will need to make some educated decisions on what your vehecle is capable of taking on and be realistic on your ability to head north through the Gibb river road (very harsh) or the Fitzroy Crossing. My decision was logical to head along the Fitzroy crossing as time is pressing and the additional bonus of making some stops at local towns along the way. I recommend to any backpackers making this trip take the fitzroy road as its mostly paved now and is likely in good condition all year round.
Along the way north along this track you will have many small towns to visit and I recommend you stop at every single one! Not just for a rest and revival but more to keep your sanity. There isn’t much out here except the odd kangaroo and a local town is just what you need to re-stock on supplies and water! Don’t go short on water… you will need it! It can get very hot in this region of the country.
Today I travelled to Halls Creek about 600km East of Derby. The towns I stopped in at along the way included Mount Hardman…. not really a mountain. And I stopped at Mueller Rangers. Both arn’t much in the way of a town but you can pick up some water and snacks in both locations if your running low! Fill up on petrol when you leave Derby too…. petrol stations are expensive and you’l need the extra fuel to get as far as Halls Creek depending on the car your in.
You will cross over the Fitzroy Crossing by about lunch time and I suggest you take a slight detour off the main road to the two national parks. I went to the Gerikie Gorge National Park and you’ll be suprise how much vegetation can exist out here! The walking tracks are a nice way to stretch your legs and see some natural enviroment for the day! Get out there!
5 Things to Do
- Try break up your drive with a stop in at Gerikie Gorge National Park
- Take a swim if your keen!
- Take one of the walking tracks to break up the day
- No hurry… Halls Creek has nothing if little at all!
- Get a good night sleep and enjoy the stars in the sky! Clear as daylight!
Gerikie Gorge – beautiful!
Best Place to Eat & Accomodation
Bbq fire – camp under the stars I suggest!
I can only say chose your directly wisely. You might regret it if you take the road less travelled and find out half way that your two flat tires and 1000km from the nearest help or service depo! Fitzroy crossing I suggest!
There isn’t any! If your building in the area contact me and I will put you in contact with a good designer for the region.
